Pāli Accents

Over the years the method of getting correct accents in web pages and print has changed. In order to view this website with correct accents a modern Unicode font needs to be installed. Below is a check on accents. If these show correctly then there should be no trouble with viewing web pages on this site as well as html in the Books section. If not then try changing the default font in the web browser.

Older articles and books (from the Download section) need a special font installed pCharter, otherwise they will show up as other types of accents, mostly french. pCharter is available for download below. There is an article here on how accents used to be obtained.

that in the FAQ section many Pāli words have had their accents removed. This was due to older limitations of the web. In a new FAQ they will be re-inserted.

Pdf files have embedded fonts and should show correct accents without needing pCharter installed.

When viewing text files in the book section, text editors need to be set for UTf-8 encoding to get the accents.

Pāli accent check

ā ī ū Ā

These should show as an a, i, u, A with a bar accent above them.

ṇ ṭ ḷ ṣ ṃ ḍ

These should show as n t l s m d with a dot accent beneath them.

ṅ ṁ

These should show as n and m with a dot accent above them.

ñ, Ñ

These should show as n and N with a tilde accent above them.

Pāli fonts for download

The following font Pcharter is available in four styles: plain, italic, bold, bold italic.
- Fonts for MAC: pChart1.bin, pHumanItalic5.bin.
- Fonts for PC: pChar1.ttf, pChar2.ttf, pChar3.ttf, pChar4.ttf, pHuma5.ttf

If your browser fails the accent test then pCharter will not help. pCharter is only for older articles and books. You will need a modern unicode font.
